History

1947 – TO NOW

South Toowoomba Bowls Club was Established in 1947.

The plaque on the gate at the entrance to the northern green says it all (the Curly Anderson Memorial Green) Thomas Sheldon, 1st Foundation Member of the South Toowoomba Bowls Club, 2nd September 1947. South Toowoomba became affiliated with the DDBA in 1950.

The first roll up happened whilst the Club house was being constructed.  In the early days of the club, the members played at our Mother Club North Toowoomba until the green and club house was available.  Alf Hodge (West Toowoomba Member) built the first club house which was built out of an old Army hut donated by the Army and transported to the present site.  A bore was put down together with a 30,000 gallon elevated tank to water the green.

Also in 1950 the Ladies Club was formed.

The club owned all of Gold Park.  The council swapped the bottom half of Gold Park for the top half. The 2nd green was then levelled by council and installed in 1957.

The Silver Jubilee 25 years was celebrated in 1972.

The 2nd stage of the club house was completed in 1947. It is interesting to note that the club in that year had about 150 members.

In 1974 the 2nd stage of the club house was completed.

1985 when the club opened its latest extensions which sees the club as it stands today.   In those days the club boasted about 260 members. Unfortunately, today the member numbers are down.

South Toowoomba Bowls Club is now hosted by Club Toowoomba – a move towards the future security of the STBC. This boasts an opportunity for the first undercover green for the Darling Downs District being built in the not too distant future.

This will be something all Darling Downs bowlers can look forward to!
